Hidden Gem Unveiled: Discovering the Serenity of Kalamaki Beach

If you’re planning a trip to Zante, Kalamaki Beach should be on your radar. Known for its golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and a more relaxed vibe compared to the busier resorts, Kalamaki Beach is the perfect destination for families, couples, and nature lovers.

As a family, we’ve been to Kalamaki 5 times and visited the beach each time. It’s at the top of my list of things to do when we visit Zante. One of my favourite beaches to visit ever if I’m perfectly honest.

Where is Kalamaki Beach?

Kalamaki Beach is located on the southern coast of Zante (Zakynthos), just a 10-minute drive from Zakynthos Town and a short distance from the famous Laganas Beach. Unlike its livelier neighbour, Kalamaki offers a more peaceful setting, making it an ideal choice for those looking to unwind.

Why Visit Kalamaki Beach?

  1. Soft Golden Sand & Shallow Waters
The beach features soft golden sand and shallow, warm waters, making it safe for families with young children.
  2. Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Site
Kalamaki Beach is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and a protected nesting site for the endangered Caretta Caretta (loggerhead sea turtles). If you visit between May and September, you might spot baby turtles making their way to the sea!
  3. No Loud Beach Bars
Unlike some of Zante’s more touristy beaches, Kalamaki has strict environmental rules, meaning no noisy beach bars or motorised water sports. This keeps the area serene and perfect for a relaxing day.
  4. Beautiful Sunset Views
The beach faces west, offering some of the most stunning sunset views on the island.

Things to Do

  • Swimming & Snorkeling: The calm, clear waters make it great for swimming and spotting marine life.
  • Turtle Watching: Take a responsible boat tour to observe turtles without disturbing their habitat.
  • Walking Along the Shore: Enjoy a long stroll along the unspoiled coastline.
  • Dining by the Beach: Several traditional tavernas nearby offer delicious Greek food with a sea view. Stani’s is my favourite for this, the cheese pie wrapped in filo with honey is my favourite ever thing to eat.

How to Get there

  • By Car: A 10-minute drive from Zakynthos Town with ample parking available.
  • By Bus: Regular local buses run between Kalamaki and the main town.
  • By Boat: Some tours include stops at Kalamaki Beach as part of a Zante coastline trip.

Where to Stay

Kalamaki has a range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly apartments to luxury resorts. Some top picks include:

  • Hotel Bitzaro Grande – Great for couples and families.
  • Exotica Hotel & Spa – A modern, all-inclusive option.
  • Kalamaki Beach Hotel – Perfect for those wanting direct beach access.

If you’re looking for a beautiful, quiet beach with natural charm, Kalamaki Beach in Zante is a must-visit. Whether you’re there to relax, swim, or see the famous loggerhead turtles, this slice of paradise offers an unforgettable experience.
