How to Have the Best Kids Travel Activity Kit

Travelling with Kids can be a bit daunting. Most children aren’t so great at sitting still for hours on end. What you need is a good Kids’ travel activity kit. It doesn’t have to be too much but something to keep curious minds busy and stave off the boring bit before you reach your destination.

Whether you’re on a 6-hour car ride down to Cornwall or an 11-hour flight to the Caribbean – the kit can be used for any destination. It only takes a little organisation to keep them happier for a little longer! I’ve created this guide to help you get your bits and bobs together and done all of the hard work for you!

First up – Snacks

Snacks are the easiest way to keep a cranky child happy. Whether they are 10 months or 10 years old… the concept is the same. Snacks will keep them quiet for at least 5 minutes and will keep away the hanger for even longer! If you’re flying, I really recommend you take some of your own snacks.

There are no limits to what you can take on board as long as it’s not in liquid form. Sometimes the wait for the snack trolley is just too much – and often costs the earth! Stay away from nut-based snacks as much as possible. I’ve been on flights where they’ve asked not to consume nuts on board as a fellow passenger has a severe nut allergy. So, I find it better to just not take these to avoid any disappointment.

Something to read

Keeping their minds busy with a book or a magazine can stave off boredom for a short while. My kids aren’t what you’d call bookworms – perhaps that’s because I don’t set that example though. They will read for a short while though, sometimes a book, sometimes a magazine. Either way, pack something to look at and keep their brains busy!

A Printable Kids Travel Activity Kit

I’ve created a travel activity kit ready for you to print and pop in your bags. Don’t forget to pack some crayons or a pen so they can have a go at some of these activities. There’s a page for a holiday journal in there which you can print numerous times and have enough for each day of your break – something to keep and look back at.

A good travel game

I can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure these games are small enough to not take up much space but at the same time need to be big enough so the pieces aren’t so small you’ll lose them in the back of the seat! these are the ones that we love.

Something to watch

I know, in an ideal world we wouldn’t be addicted to games and TV but we are and if it makes life easier sometimes, why not utilise it? Be prepared before you go and download a movie or a few episodes of their favourite show to keep them occupied and maybe a game that doesn’t need to be connected to the internet to play.

If you are a Prime, Disney+ or Netflix (or most streaming services tbf) customer you can download episodes to your phone or device and they’ll be ready to go. Don’t forget the headphones though – not everyone wants to hear that episode of Bluey on repeat! Headphones will keep your child focused too and they’re likely to sit still for longer.

Whichever way(s) you distract your kids from boredom, I hope the journey is a fun one! It doesn’t have to be stressful with kids. Take no notice of the inevitable tutting sounds some old people make when they see you boarding a flight with 3 kids. Enjoy the flight/car ride/boat trip/train journey, it’s as memorable as the destination.

No one will judge if your snacks are a bag of Haribo and not something homemade and organic (OK, some people might but does their opinion matter?) If your child wants to watch the same episode of Peppa Pig on repeat for 4 hours… who cares? If your child is safe, happy and relaxed, it’s a win-win for everyone.

Wherever you’re going, have a great time! Enjoy the journey 🙂
